Voices of our community

Hear what our program participants are saying

“Thank you very much for an amazing program. As a person of color, makes me happy and of course my kids to see it in their books. It’s a topic we bring up every day because it’s important to us.

We love everyone and the differences in their cultures to ours. And of course the similarities!  My heart is filled with joy. My daughter even showed her teacher her new book!”

“I think it is insanely important to provide diverse voices and experiences in texts for my kiddo, especially because we are a white family. Books are a great way to introduce topics and issues that affect society today and offer a springboard for discussions at a level they are ready for.  I do not want my child being exposed to only one viewpoint or perspective from white culture.”

“My daughters are Latina and I want them to read books where they are represented. Additionally, as a white woman raising two brown-skinned girls, I want them to know and own their beauty and strength in this world. I also want them to understand how they can stand with those who are being treated unjustly and do what is right.”

“I want to do better for my kids and I welcome any resource that can help with that. I want them to help create a world where racism is recognized (too many people believe it doesn’t really exist) and where they can help fight it.”

“I want my mixed children to see more kids like them in story books. I want them to feel more relatable to the heroes and heroines that they see everywhere. Representation matters.”

“I want my children to respect all races. By reading diverse books, I will help them develop an opinion that all people are equal. I also want them to understand different cultures and different points of view, reading diverse books will help with that.”
